Overview

A modern e-commerce application covering the full journey on both sides of the counter: customers browse, search, add to cart and check out; administrators manage products, stock and orders from a dashboard.

Challenge

Cart, stock and order state have to stay consistent under concurrent use, checkout has to be secure, and the admin side needs to be simple enough to use without training.

Process

  1. 01

Modelled the data first: products, variants, categories, carts, orders and users, with relations enforced by the database.

  2. 02

Built authentication with role-based access so customers and administrators see different things.

  3. 03

Implemented the cart as a server-side resource so it survives devices and sessions.

  4. 04

Integrated payment processing and wrote the order lifecycle from placed to fulfilled.

Solution

A Next.js storefront and admin app on a Node.js API with PostgreSQL through Prisma. Payments run through Stripe Checkout, orders are recorded with their line items and status history, and the admin dashboard manages the catalogue and order queue.
